Environmentalist seeks Senate seat
SEVERNA PARK - An environmental activist from Crownsville launched his campaign for the state Senate seat this morning by going after its Republican incumbent.
Democrat Scott Hymes challenged state Sen. Janet Greenip's voting records at a rally with supporters on the Baltimore Annapolis Trail in Severna Park, a key part of District 33.
"Janet Greenip votes against healthy air laws at a time when Anne Arundel County residents suffer from some of the worst air pollution in the country..." he said in a prepared statement released this morning. "Our families deserve a leader who will fight for what's right for everyone, not just what's right for the extreme right-wing."
Mrs. Greenip, R-Crofton, said this morning she's representing her district's best interests, including opposing gay marriage, keeping taxes low and controlling government spending.
"I believe that's what they sent there to do," she said.
District 33 includes a large stretch of the county, from Severna Park to Crofton to south county.
Mr. Hymes, 42, said he would fight to improve the environment, strengthen schools and help independent small business owners. It's the first run at elected office for Mr. Hymes, owner of Alliance Entertainment, a music brokerage and production company. He serves on the Severn River Commission. |
